Thank You, Library: A Season of Gratitude
| Jaime Eastman

The library gives me countless reasons for gratitude. From giggles bouncing out of storytime to connecting with colleagues across the country, the joy far outweighs the challenges. This season, I’m being more intentional about thankfulness. Here are just a few things I’m especially grateful for this season.

Library Joy
Thank you, children’s laughter, for filling the library like bubbles and brightening my day. New readers, thank you for trusting me to find the right book. Little moments, thank you for proving that something as simple as helping with the copy machine can change someone’s day.
I have deep gratitude for the moments of everyday joy that create library magic. Storytime giggles equal new friends connecting over favorite stories, while full-bellied laughs during programs are reminders that we encourage excitement and learning, side by side. Simply helping a frustrated patron navigate the printing and receiving a heartfelt thank you reminds me that our work matters. It’s as much about the people we connect with and the joy we inspire as it is the books on our shelves.
Personal Connections
Thank you, storytime families, for being familiar faces, excited to see me each week, and greeting me enthusiastically every time. Playgroups, thank you for letting me bring joy and play to little ones and their learning. Familiar patrons, thank you for being the names and faces that make the library feel like home.
I feel profound gratitude that our work is about relationships and the many ways I’m part of individual journeys, even briefly. Storytime families, playgroups, and everyday patron interactions remind me that libraries are about connection. These interactions bring fresh enthusiasm and perspective, and remind me that good things take time. Life is about making the most of each moment – the little moments and conversations are often the best way to connect patrons with relevant resources. Every patron I greet by name, or that I recognize with a smile and a wave, reminds me of our bigger community. Connecting with people is what connects me to this work.

Colleagues and Community
Thank you, my library team, for being the ones who encourage me, support me, and challenge me daily. ALSC family, thank you for reminding me I’m part of a bigger community of dreamers, doers, and learners. Library leadership, both within and outside ALSC, thank you for steady guidance when the path feels uncertain.
Gratitude overwhelms me because I’m not alone in this work. The moments that remind me of our library support network far outweigh the moments I feel overwhelmed, confused, or alone. Within my building, I have supportive colleagues and mentors to help navigate hard moments and work creatively. Within ALSC, there’s a community that shares, practices vulnerability, and supports each other. Throughout this work, we work together to navigate change and uncertainty. We use transparency, communication, and involvement to make us stronger in our work. This keeps me focused on the future.
Play and Programs
Thank you, library programs, for bringing families together and opening doors to new opportunities. Play, thank you for providing laughter, smiles, and learning. Messy, thank you for reminding me that things don’t need to be perfect to be wonderful.
I have enduring gratitude that my work revolves around early learning and play-based library exploration. Each new program is an opportunity to meet a community need, connect with families, and inspire joy and learning. Play-based programs remind me that learning is often joyful, messy, and hands-on. From paint on all our fingers to dough squished between our toes, our families show us daily that fun is one of the best learning tools. These messy moments open doors and let us provide resources and experiences families may not otherwise have.
