American Progress is an 1872 painting by John Gast that shows progress at the expense of fleeing indigenous tribes. The “Americans” in the painting are all white. The painting is a metaphor for the Trump version of patriotic education.

Dear Secretary of Education McMahon,

This is in response to your call for comments on the “Proposed Priority and Definitions-Secretary’s Supplemental Priority and Definitions on Promoting Patriotic Education.” I am circulating my comments and encouraging other historians and educators to comment as well. The webpage for comments is open until October 17. I encourage teachers, historians, students, and the general public to respond.

First let me introduce myself. I am a former New York City high school social studies teacher and the director of social studies education at Hofstra University. I have written or co-written nine books on teaching social studies and on history. I am also the recipient of a number of local, regional and national teaching awards.

Like you, I believe in teaching patriotic history, but I don’t think we agree what that means. I am replying to a Department of Education grant guideline where patriotic education is defined as a “presentation of the history of America grounded in an accurate, honest, unifying, inspiring, and ennobling characterization of the American founding and foundational principles; a clear examination of how the United States has admirably grown closer to its noble principles throughout its history; and the concept that commitment to America’s aspirations is beneficial and justified.”
