Donald Trump Calling Women Pigs and More: A Brief History

The president recently revisited one of his favorite insults for women he doesnโ€™t like, snapping, โ€œQuiet, piggy,โ€ at a female reporter who dared to ask a question about Jeffrey Epstein.

Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey was asking President Donald Trump a follow-up question on Air Force One last week when he leaned toward her, pointed his finger, and said: โ€œQuiet. Quiet, piggy.โ€

He had deflected her first question, about a recently released Jeffrey Epstein email in which the late sex trafficker said Trump โ€œknew about the girls.โ€ Lucey was merely doing her job. But Trump, of course, doesnโ€™t have much respect for good journalismโ€”or, it would seem, for women, as his puerile โ€œpiggyโ€ taunt indicates.

The exchangeโ€”which has since gone viralโ€”is shocking in its crudeness and nastiness, even by Trump administration standards. But this is also a familiar insult for Trump. Alicia Machado, a former Miss Universe pageant winner, previously said that Trump once called her โ€œMiss Piggy.โ€ Trump didnโ€™t exactly deny the incident after Hillary Clinton brought it up during a 2016 debate.

โ€œShe gained a massive amount of weight,โ€ Trump said of Machado on Fox & Friends the next morning, apparently in defense of his insult, โ€œand it was a real problem.โ€ During another debate that cycle, before he became the GOPโ€™s nominee, moderator Megyn Kelly noted that Trump had โ€œcalled women you donโ€™t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals.โ€

โ€œOnly Rosie Oโ€™Donnell,โ€ Trump replied, referring to the comedian heโ€™s been feuding with for nearly 20 years now.

Trump doesnโ€™t only love comparing women to pigs. In 2011, The New York Timesโ€™ Gail Collins wrote that Trump once told her she had โ€œthe face of a dog.โ€ In 2018 he described Omarosa Manigault Newman, a former Apprentice contestant and White House aide, as a โ€œdogโ€ and a โ€œlying lowlife.โ€

Trump also dubbed Stormy Danielsโ€”the adult-film actor who said she had a sexual encounter with him in 2006โ€”โ€œHorseface.โ€ (Trumpโ€™s effort to silence Daniels about the alleged encounterโ€”which he has deniedโ€”resulted in his conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records; Trump is still trying to get the conviction thrown out.)

โ€œThe president of the United States is supposed to be the moral leader, the leader of the country, and heโ€™s acting like some thug on the street,โ€ the longtime White House reporter April Ryan, who was called โ€œMiss Piggyโ€ by a Trump official in 2018, told The Guardian Tuesday. โ€œItโ€™s one thing for his minions to say that, but for him to call a woman that? That also shows how upset he is about the Epstein files. It lets us know that thereโ€™s probably some fire there.โ€

The intensified scrutiny over his relationship with Epsteinโ€”and his administrationโ€™s handling of the caseโ€”has been a particular point of political vulnerability, testing his typically tight grip on his party. When ABC Newsโ€™ Mary Bruce asked Trump about the matter on Tuesday, before lawmakers on Capitol Hill passed legislation calling on the Justice Department to release files related to the Epstein case, the president in turn attacked her and threatened to revoke the outletโ€™s broadcasting license.

โ€œI think you are a terrible reporter,โ€ he told Bruce in the Oval Office, where he was hosting Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi crown prince who, according to US intelligence, ordered the brutal killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. (โ€œA lot of people didnโ€™t like that gentleman that youโ€™re talking about,โ€ Trump responded when Bruce asked an earlier question about Khashoggi, who was killed and then dismembered with a bone saw. โ€œWhether you like him or didnโ€™t like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it, and we can leave it at that. You donโ€™t have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that.โ€)
