October brings falling leaves, cozy sweaters, and the thrill of spooky stories in the dark. For many kids, this is the perfect season to explore a little fear in a safe, fun way. But how do we find just the right scare level for young readers? As librarians, parents, and caregivers, we know that not every child wantsโ€”or is ready forโ€”truly frightening stories. At the same time, many children crave just a little shiver up their spine, the kind that makes reading thrilling without keeping them awake all night. Finding that balance can be tricky, but itโ€™s also part of the fun. My own love of horror began with the classicsโ€”Goosebumps by R.L. Stine and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz.
