Scary Stories for Brave Readers

October brings falling leaves, cozy sweaters, and the thrill of spooky stories in the dark. For many kids, this is the perfect season to explore a little fear in a safe, fun way. But how do we find just the right scare level for young readers? As librarians, parents, and caregivers, we know that not every child wants—or is ready for—truly frightening stories. At the same time, many children crave just a little shiver up their spine, the kind that makes reading thrilling without keeping them awake all night. Finding that balance can be tricky, but it’s also part of the fun. My own love of horror began with the classics—Goosebumps by R.L. Stine and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz.
